Acne Treatment Q & A

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that can affect both men and women, and not just during the teenage years. It occurs when your hair follicles cannot properly move dead skin cells and other debris from your skin. The oil your body naturally produces thickens, creating a blockage that your skin cannot easily clear on its own.

Everyone has a unique experience with acne. For some, occasional blackheads and whiteheads are the primary complaints. Others suffer from large, painful nodules or pus-filled lumps under the skin. You can have acne on just a small area of your face, chest, shoulders, or upper back, or more widespread outbreaks that affect larger sections of your body.

What causes of Acne?

A number of factors can lead to acne. In decades past, many people thought that acne was brought on by certain foods or skin products. Today, doctors understand that acne is usually caused by a combination of:

  • Clogged hair follicles
  • Bacterial growth
  • Inflammation
  • Excess oil production

Hormonal changes can trigger acne, which is why teenagers are more commonly affected than adults. High levels of stress, changes in your diet, and certain medications can also bring on acne outbreaks. Rosacea acne, or hormonal rosacea, is a similar condition to acne and is often linked to hormonal shifts women go through as they near menopause.

What can be done to treat Acne?

The first step in effectively treating acne is a thorough skin evaluation. Your provider examines your skin and discusses your experience with acne. This information helps them shape a treatment plan tailored to your specific set of needs.

Prescription medication can help control acne. In many cases, however, there are non-pharmaceutical options that can deliver lasting results without the risk of side effects.

The PicoWay™ laser platform uses concentrated light to break apart areas of heavy pigmentation. This can improve the appearance of dark spots caused by acne scarring. PicoWay laser treatments also prompt your body to produce new collagen and elastin, which smooths and softens your skin from within.

Another approach to treating acne uses ablative treatments to carefully remove the outermost layers of skin. This reveals a layer of fresh, healthy cells, and helps your follicles remain clear. Chemical peels, including the popular VI® Peel, also remove the outer layers of skin and can smooth rough skin textures and prevent future breakouts.

The Dr. Moma Health & Wellness Clinic team also offers a select range of advanced skin care products that help treat acne. During your visit, you’ll learn which products are right for you, and how to refine your skin care routines to soothe and support your skin.
