How Phentermine Powers Weight Loss

In her clinical weight loss practice, Dr. Moma uses a number of science-backed tools to help her patients safely and successfully shed unwanted body fat (and keep it off) to look and feel their best.

Phentermine is one of those tools. Here, we’ll discuss what phentermine is, how it works, what the clinical research says about phentermine’s effectiveness for healthy weight loss, and why Dr. Moma uses it with her patients.

What Is Phentermine?

Phentermine has been an FDA-approved weight loss drug for over 60 years. It can be safely used for up to 12 weeks.

In the United States, phentermine is most often sold under the brand names:

  • Adipex-P
  • Lomaira
  • Suprenza

How FDA-Approved Phentermine Promotes Weight Loss

The main way that Phentermine promotes weight loss is by suppressing appetite. Several large-scale clinical studies bear out the potent weight loss effects of Phentermine supplementation:

“Mean decrease of both body weight and waist circumference in phentermine-treated subjects were significantly greater than that of placebo group… Significant number of subjects in phentermine group accomplished weight reduction of 5% or greater from the baseline and 10% or more (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the groups.”

In another study of Phentermine’s effects on long-term weight loss in combination with other lifestyle changes, the results were impressive:

“Medications approved for long-term obesity treatment, when used as an adjunct to lifestyle intervention, lead to greater mean weight loss and an increased likelihood of achieving clinically-meaningful 1-year weight loss relative to placebo.”

What Is the Recommended Dosage of Phentermine For Weight Loss?

Generally, the optimal dosage of phentermine for weight loss is 15-37.5 mg daily, ideally before breakfast. It’s best to take phentermine earlier in the day as its stimulant effects can potentially disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle) and therefore negatively impact sleep.

A few potential side effects of phentermine include headache, tachycardia, raised blood pressure, insomnia and irritability. With the right adjustments, though, and proper precautions, these side effects can be largely avoided or mitigated.

What Other Weight Loss Therapies Are Best Paired With Phentermine?

Phentermine works best when it’s combined with Dr. Moma’s other recommended therapeutic weight loss strategies, which include:
